The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is an impartial, neutral, and independent organization whose exclusively humanitarian mission is to protect the lives and dignity of victims of armed conflict and other situations of violence and to provide them with assistance. The ICRC is mandated to work in countries affected by armed conflict or other situations of violence. The ICRC is present in over 100 countries and has some 18,000 staff worldwide. In 2014, the ICRC expanded its presence in Ukraine. Currently, we have over 900 team members working across the county in various professional fields.

About the job

The ICRC Protection Unit is seeking a highly capable Protection Field Officer to join our team in Kyiv. This role is contributing to the implementation and monitoring of ICRC protection activities, in particular in relation to the protection of the civilian population (PCP) file. The Protection Field Officer will contribute to the day-to-day implementation and development of the safe cross-border passage program (SCBP) as his/her main responsibility. This program seeks to support and facilitate the voluntary repatriation of nationals of the parties to the conflict who are residing on the territory of the other party.

Start date: September 2024 or Immediately

Your Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Implements protection activities under the supervision of the line manager
  • Contributes to analyses of the security, socioeconomic, cultural, and political environment relevant to the ICRC, shares relevant information with team members and reports any change in the situation.
  • Contributes to the design and implementation of projects
  • Collects, compiles, and interprets protection-related information (with appropriate care for staff risk management)
  • Analyses and contributes to written internal reporting and activity programming (as part of institutional exercises)
  • Develops and maintains contact with the municipal/regional authorities, local/regional National Society branches, the local population, suppliers, etc

About you

To be successful as a Protection Field Officer in the Protection Work Unit, you should possess the following qualifications and experiences and have the following characteristics:

  • Ukrainian citizenship or permanent residence permit in Ukraine
  • University degree or relevant professional experience
  • 3-5 years’ previous professional experience in the field of social/political/economic science or similar
  • Excellent command of English and Ukrainian
  • Computer literacy
  • Self-motivated with a strong commitment to teamwork and humanitarian principles
  • Flexible, enthusiastic, and willing to learn
  • Ability to work independently, as well as effectively under supervision
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks
  • Ability to work within a diverse team and establish and maintain good working relations in a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural, and multi-disciplinary environment
