Program / Department Summary
Mercy Corps’ Ukraine response meets the humanitarian needs of people affected by the war in Ukraine. Since the escalation of the war in 2022, Mercy Corps has supported more than 750,000 conflict-affected people in Ukraine and neighbouring countries. We have provided cash assistance, food and hygiene kits, and psychosocial support for people in emergency situations; grants for micro, small and medium businesses, as well as small to medium farming enterprises; and conducted large-scale information campaigns. Notably, nearly all our programming is delivered in partnership with civil society organizations matching humanitarian action with capacity strengthening and a real commitment to localization.
The Position
As a Security and Safety Coordinator, you will play a crucial role in our risk management systems, ensuring business continuity and prioritizing the well-being of our staff.

Accountability to Participants and Stakeholders
Mercy Corps team members are expected to support all efforts toward accountability, specifically to our program participants, community partners, other stakeholders, and to international standards guiding international relief and development work. The successful Security and Safety Coordinator will be a trustworthy professional who demonstrates confidentiality, non-judgmental behavior, and earns the trust of the team. They possess a solid understanding of programming modalities and align security and safety practices accordingly. An effective team player, they collaborate closely with the Operations team, Crisis Analytics, and other departments, fostering teamwork and cooperation. Their strong decision-making skills enable them to efficiently manage the daily go/no-go process, ensuring timely and informed decisions. Adaptable in rapidly changing contexts, they play a key role in the Security Risk Assessment process, demonstrating flexibility. With a commitment to humanitarian principles, they show a genuine interest in program objectives beyond traditional military or law enforcement experience. The incumbent excels in communication, both written and verbal, conveying information clearly and concisely. They exhibit strong analytical thinking, assessing complex situations to identify risks and propose solutions, while also possessing conflict management skills to promote a peaceful work environment. Their cultural competence allows them to work effectively with diverse teams and local communities, and their resilience ensures they can manage stress in high-pressure environments. Equipped with knowledge of security and safety protocols, they understand risk assessment, emergency response, and incident management. Additionally, they bring technical expertise in security systems and communications, alongside problem-solving and decision-making abilities that consider available information and potential consequences.
Living Conditions / Environmental Conditions
The position is based in Mykolayiv, Ukraine. Given the emergency context, this position might require exceptional work schedules, including evenings and weekends. During the field trips living conditions will be adjusted to the field conditions.
