Position: Project Officer
Project Name: Strengthening Independent Media for a Strong Democratic Ukraine
Location: Kyiv, Ukraine
Assignment period: 01.02.2025- 31.12.2025
Availability: 5 days per week

I. Background Information

DW Akademie is Deutsche Welle’s center for international media development, journalism training and knowledge transfer. Our projects strengthen the human right to freedom of expression and independent decisions based on reliable facts and constructive dialogue.
DW Akademie enables people throughout the world to make decisions based on independent information, reliable facts and constructive dialogue. We stand for free media, free expression and free societies worldwide.
DW Akademie is working with partners in Ukraine in the past 10 years and supporting media and contribute to the media development.

Introducing the partnership
For the implementation of our projects, DW Akademie is looking for a person located in Kyiv with experience in media/journalism and/or experience in working with international organisations.

Project Officer

This is a contractor position, 5 days a week. You work closely with the project staff based at DW Headquarter in Bonn, Germany. The project is funded by the European Union and co-funded by the German Federal Foreign Office. The project provides a set of support measures for Ukrainian independent national and regional media to enable them to play their important role in the Ukrainian democracy at community level. The aim is to increase sustainably the capacities of independent media. Moreover, the project contributes to the media literacy competences of Ukrainians.
The remuneration is based on invoices with timesheets.

II. Scope of work

The applicant will have the following duties and responsibilities:
• You work as local contact person closely with the Project Team in Germany and Ukrainian partners
• You coordinate the activities of the project and provide support to the Project Team
• You exchange and coordinate with other donor and media organizations
• You support the project registration process by compiling and proofreading all formally required documents
• You maintain contact with international partners, experts and sub-grantees
• You assist in organizing project events in Ukraine
• You coordinate correspondence in different languages
• You contribute to communication materials and ensure visibility of the project

Other duties and responsibilities beyond the ones mentioned above may be required in the project.

III. Requirements and Qualifications

Mandatory
• You are familiar with the local journalism landscape in Ukraine
• You are based in Kyiv
• You have at least a bachelor’s degree in journalism, media management, communications or similar
• You have at least two-years of relevant work experience
• You have sound user knowledge of the MS Office package (Excel, Power Point, Word, Outlook)

• You have good verbal and written communication skills in English. You possess native level of Ukrainian language. A basic knowledge of German would be desirable.
• You like to work in an international team.
• You are a team player who likes to work with a variety of people and tasks.
• You describe yourself as flexible, communicative, and you are open to contribute to the visibility of the project and open to work with partners and other stakeholders.

Desirable
• You have a network in the media sector of Ukraine
• Previous experience in an international environment would be an asset.
• Previous experience in working within donor-funded projects would be an asset
• You have experience and knowledge of public relations

Other requirements:
• The position is Ukraine based, in Kyiv, with possibilities to work occasionally remotely.
• Business trips might be required within Ukraine and to other European countries including to DW Headquarter in Germany
