Annex 2 – TERMS OF REFERENCE
FOR THE CONSULTANCY CONTRACT OF: MHPSS Consultant (Creative Mapping and Research)
- Duty Station of the Consultancy: Lviv, Ukraine
- Duration of Consultancy: 3 months, with possibility of extension pending on funds availability and satisfactory job performance.
- Nature of the consultancy: Category B Consultancy
Under the overall supervision of the Chief of Mission and the Senior Programme Officer (MHPSS), and under the direct supervision of the Programme Officer (MHPSS), the MHPSS Consultant (Creative Mapping and Research) will support in conducting a desk review and a creative mapping to identify the psychosocially prominent artistic and performative elements in Ukrainian traditions and rituals, outline the culturally familiar and acceptable visual and performing arts genres, and sports in Ukraine across different regions, as well as support in establishing contacts and partnerships with local artists, as well as with cultural and artistic institutions, including theatres, galleries, museums etc.
- Project Context and Scope:
The purpose of the research and creative mapping is to enhance the Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) Programme’s grounding in locally generated practices that are conducive to community healing, recovery and resilience.
- Organizational Department/ Unit to which the Consultant is contributing: Response, Recovery & Resilience (RRR) Unit /Mental Health and Psychosocial Support.
- Category B Consultants: Tasks to be performed under this contract:
- Support the MHPSS Programme Officer (MHPSS) to carry-out a desk research and conduct a creative mapping[1] exercise to identify the psychosocially prominent artistic and performative elements in Ukrainian traditions and rituals, outline the culturally familiar and acceptable visual and performing arts genres, such as theatre, dance, choir, music, handicrafts, poetry etc., as well as sports in Ukraine across different regions.
- Support in establishing contacts and partnerships with local individual artists, as well as with cultural and artistic institutions, including theatres, galleries, museums, local festivals, drawing and painting studios, photography workshops, dance centres, pottery and other handicraft workshops in Western regions of Ukraine (Lviv, Zakarpattia, Chernivtsi and Ivano-Frankivsk).
- Support the Social Activities Facilitator and contribute to the development and design of cultural initiatives, such as social theatre performances, visual arts and music courses, handcraft workshops, language and culture courses, storytelling and poetry events, sports tournaments and activities, based on identified needs and resources within the community.
- Support in drafting segments of a technical manual on the use of art-based approaches for community engagement and community-based psychosocial support.
- Perform such other duties as may be assigned.
- Education, Experience and/or skills required
Education
- Bachelor’s Degree of Arts and Culture Studies with, or
- Bachelor’s Degree of Art in Social Sciences (anthropology, sociology, social work).
- Experience
- Experience and skills in conducting research, ability to contextualize and analyse data and various research materials, such as articles, essays, academic research papers, cultural newsletters and journals.
- Attention to detail and strong writing skills in English language.
- Skills and experience in representation, liaison with different cultural and artistic institutions, organizations and foundations.
- Communication skills with a wide range of people, including people of culturally diverse backgrounds.
- Good knowledge of at least one of the below artistic and/or socio-cultural mediums, but not limited to: poetry, music, traditional dance, theatre/drama, drawing and painting, traditional weaving, film and cinema, storytelling (including traditional folk stories), sports (basketball, football, athletic running, yoga etc.), traditional games etc.
- Good understanding of local culture and social norms.
- Previous experience working with local artists and cultural practitioners, including organization and implementation of various cultural and artistic events and initiatives.
- Previous experience working in community-based Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) programmes (desirable).
- Travel required

Fluency in English and Ukrainian is required. Russian is desirable.

[1] Creative Mapping is a mapping of 1) existing artistic forms, genres and elements in country’s culture and context (such as theatre, dance, choir, music, poetry, painting, drawing, traditional weaving, sculpting, miniature art, as well as rituals and celebrations that carry performative elements); 2) identifying and mapping local institutions, artistic centres, cultural foundations, local theatres and other art-based studios for possible cooperation; and 3) identifying local individual artists of various artistic backgrounds.
