The history of EY started at the beginning of the 20th century when Alwin Ernst and Artur Young founded two separate companies. Year after year, these companies gained authority in the market of auditing, accounting, and consulting services. In 1989, the two companies merged and created the Ernst&Young company. Ernst&Young changed its name to EY in 2013.

Today, EY is an international leader in audit, taxation, law, deal support, and consulting. The company has more than 700 offices and about 365 thousand employees in 150 countries. EY is one of the four largest auditing and consulting companies worldwide.

EY started its work in Ukraine in 1991. Nowadays, it has offices in Kyiv and Lviv, and about 650 employees work there. It serves hundreds of Ukrainian enterprises and international corporations.

The company does not only serve clients but also changes the world for the better by publishing insights, research, and perspectives on issues that matter to business and society in general. For example, the company conducts the annual Best Employer Survey in Ukraine, and its consultants participate in the implementation of state-level projects.

For example, the company conducts the annual Best Employer Survey in Ukraine, and its consultants participate in the implementation of state-level projects.

We should also add that the team of EY specialists joined several initiatives to develop a plan for the renovation of our country in the post-war period. In particular, the EY team in Ukraine took part in filling out the European Commission's questionnaire, which is necessary for acquiring the status of a candidate in the EU. The specialists in tax, legal, strategy, transaction practice, IT consulting, climate and sustainable development joined to fill out the EU questionnaire. They also provided reasonable answers in the sections on transport and infrastructure, energy and tax policy.

Since the first days of the war, the company has been doing everything possible to meet the needs of employees and their relatives who joined the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and serve in the front line.

As part of the “One Day's Salary for the Needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine'' campaign, EY employees donate from 50% to 100% or more of their salary during one day to the Armed Forces Support Foundation. After that, the company doubles the collected sum of money.

During 2023, this campaign was held six times. For this money EY fulfilled 127 orders from various units of the Armed Forces and purchased 39 drones, 3 Starlinks, 21 optical devices, 1 car, 10 charging stations and much more. They also held additional fund-raising campaigns and bought tasty and useful gifts for the front line units for the Day of Defenders of Ukraine. Also, EY employees recorded a thank-you video for the defenders. More than 30 company laptops were also handed over for the needs of the Armed Forces. Now the company receiving next requests from the soldiers and will fulfil them.

We cancelled the traditional celebration of Company Day in the summer. All the money planned for this event we handed over to the Help People Charitable Fund to support victims of the explosion of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant.

We also established partnerships with the "Children of Heroes" foundation, which cares for the families of fallen soldiers. 70 wards of the fund received New Year's gifts from our colleagues. We have developed a comprehensive educational program for children. Currently, with our support, 25 teenagers have taken career guidance tests and are preparing for NMT and admission to the university. Another 15 children are learning English with the help of our volunteer colleagues from various EY offices. We plan to hold more events in the spring of 2024.

The comfort and safety of employees are the most important in EY

The company's Kyiv office is a large open space with comfortable workplaces and a kitchen where you can have a snack, and make coffee or tea. Most of all, employees like to spend time on the large balcony with a view of Khreschatyk. If the weather is good, you can both rest and work outdoors.

The office in Lviv was opened later than the one in Kyiv — in 2019. However, it is actively developing and plans to invite more and more specialists to work. One of the principles of the company is flexibility. Therefore, the relocation between Ukrainian offices is possible with the consent of the employee.

Before the pandemic, EY employees worked in the office with the possibility of working remotely after a prior agreement with management. Nowadays, during martial law, the team works remotely most of the time. However, there is an opportunity to come to work in the office if necessary.

The company created the following conditions for each employee to be able to perform their work well:

  • The offices were equipped with a generator, the Starlink system, and supplies of drinking and technical water.
  • In the fall of 2022, all employees of EY in Ukraine received additional assistance from the company. The company helped their employees to arrange workplaces at their homes because of the possible lack of electricity and communication.

Trust and responsibility are fundamental principles of work in EY

People who work in EY are united by the following values:

  • honesty and respect;
  • teamwork and inclusion;
  • energy, enthusiasm, and courage to be leaders.

The organization of work processes in EY is based on inclusion and trust between team members, managers, and subordinates. Officially, the working day lasts from 9:00 to 18:00. You need to be in touch during this time. However, you can always be away for a few hours or start working later by informing the team in advance. If you stick to the deadlines and show the result, no one will monitor whether you spent 8 hours at the workplace.

The company believes if employees work according to their schedule and choose their place of work independently, it contributes to the well-being of employees and ensures the necessary balance between work and personal life. The benefits allow the company to provide high-quality services to all customers.

Everyone is responsible for their work and has a considerable impact on the final result. When making important decisions, the opinion of all team members is taken into account. The company’s management always encourages colleagues to take the initiative.

KPIs are set for each employee. It affects the annual salary review and the possibility of moving to the next professional level.

They keep in constant contact with each employee, regardless of their location. Group video calls between the partner and the EY team in Ukraine take place regularly. Some crucial issues and news are discussed there.

In addition, there are weekly or monthly meetings on current issues and projects among colleagues in teams and departments.

Yevheniia Kostitsina,
Employer Brand Development Specialist
At such meetings, we always ask the team members about their mood, share news, discuss trips, completed courses, and other personal achievements. With the forced transition to remote working, we began to value more informal and personal conversations with colleagues. At least twice a year, meetings of the entire EY team in Ukraine are held. We discuss current results, important news, and congratulate colleagues on work anniversaries.

How EY cares about the health and rest of employees

Days off, sick leave, and vacation are provided under the labor legislation of Ukraine, but with additional benefits. All employees, regardless of position and length of service, have the right to take an annual paid vacation lasting 35 working days instead of the 24 calendar days prescribed by law. It is also allowed to take several days off if the employee gets married or needs to stay at home with an ill minor child.

Corporate health insurance covers emergency, inpatient, outpatient, routine dental care, and medical expenses for all employees. In addition, the company holds health days once a year, when everyone can get advice from various medical specialists, take tests, undergo examinations, and attend lectures about health.

EY has a Wellness program to support the physical and moral health of employees. It includes sports events, meetings with a psychologist, and various training sessions. Such activities promote informal communication between colleagues, form a team spirit and help to find intersections between work and personal life.

Polina Piavchuk,
HR specialist
Sports events are the favorite format of team building among our colleagues. Most often, we choose events that aim to raise funds for socially important and useful projects. Participation in such projects gives additional motivation and the feeling that we can make the world a better place.

The company had a tradition to organize two annual corporate parties. The first one was a large-scale New Year's celebration. It usually took place at a venue and was accompanied by an entertainment program. The second one was a summer corporate party where employees took part in various outdoor sports activities.

At the end of 2022, EY canceled the traditional New Year's party. Instead, the company organized plenty of charitable events. Money, allocated for the New Year's party, was used to purchase power banks, generators, and flashlights for the children of fallen heroes. The company also provided everything necessary for EY employees and their relatives who serve in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Currently, EY has cancelled traditional corporate celebrations. Instead, the company increased its participation in charitable initiatives, which are necessary for Ukrainian society in this difficult time. Funds for the celebration are redirected to support the children of fallen heroes, as well as to provide support for EY employees who are serving in the ranks of the Armed Forces, or their relatives and friends who have joined the army.

The company supports young people and cares about the preservation of the planet

EY supports and organizes dozens of educational projects for youth:

  • EY Campus is a career program for students of economic, legal, and technical specialties;
  • Cyber Consulting Bootcamp is an educational project for students of technical specialties who are interested in the field of cyber security and IT consulting;
  • Strategy Case Challenge is a competition in developing solutions for a real project on the restoration of the economy of Ukraine.
Over the past ten years, the projects, organized or supported by the company, have involved about 15,000 students. More than 500 students and graduates have been employed.

The company also implements several educational initiatives which have the aim to give equal opportunities to children of socially vulnerable categories:

  • Scholar. It provides scholarships to boarding school graduates;
  • EY English school. It provides individual English lessons for children without parental support;
  • External independent testing project. This project assists children from low-income families, children with disabilities, orphans, etc. with choosing a profession and paying for tutorial fees.

Every year the company's specialists join pro bono projects. They become mentors for social entrepreneurs, public organizations, or representatives of vulnerable population groups.

In addition, EY supports environmental initiatives and aims to reduce the company's carbon footprint as much as possible by 2025.

EY strictly adhere to the principles of the Green Office in their activities. Since 2008, the company has been minimizing the negative impact on the environment and conducting information campaigns for employees about ways to reduce CO2. They have already replaced business trips with video communication (did it even before quarantine). Motion sensors were installed in the offices to avoid excessive use of electricity. EY has developed a code of ethics for suppliers and focused their attention on the importance of observing the principles of frugal management of resources.

Before the pandemic, several annual events were held to compensate for the damage the company caused to the planet. Employees were planting trees and helping nature conservation institutions. In the future, the company plans to work even more actively in this direction.

What promotes career development for EY employees?

EY actively helps employees realize their career potential and achieve professional goals. The company has its training system. Each service line that provides services to customers has its own unique Learning Map. It contains information on mandatory hard and soft skills training. The information is different for each professional level. It helps employees to grow and develop.

EY provides all employees with free access to online learning resources on the Udemy platform. The goFLUENT application is also available. Everyone can use this app and learn seven languages online, including Business English. Mastering foreign languages helps employees cooperate with colleagues from EY offices in different countries and with international partners.

EY Badges staff development program. These are virtual awards of various degrees: bronze, silver, gold, and platinum. They indicate the level of qualification of an employee in the field of analytics, cyber security, the latest technologies, and innovations. They can be used both inside and outside the company. To get them, it is necessary to undergo certain training, demonstrate the acquired knowledge in practice, and receive a recommendation from a mentor.

 EY has become the first organization to offer a virtual free EY Tech MBA program developed in partnership with Hult International Business School. The program is available to all employees, regardless of grade, residence, or previous qualifications.

International and professional certification. The EY company helps its employees obtain international professional certifications (ACCA, CPA, CIMA, CFA, CISSP, CISA, PMP, APICS CPIM, etc.).

International mobility programs. Participants of such programs get the opportunity to work in the company's offices abroad. They acquire unique professional skills, learn the specifics of doing business in different countries, and get to know a new culture. In the long term, the experience of working abroad opens up wider career opportunities for the employee. Before the start of the pandemic, more than 200 EY representatives from Ukraine participated in mobility programs. With the beginning of a full-scale invasion, another mobility program — Mobility4U — began to operate in the company. It is aimed at Ukrainians who have the desire to live and work in other countries temporarily.

From January 2015 to February 2017, I worked at the EY office in Salt Lake City, USA. At first, I was a Junior Manager. After a while, I became a Senior Manager. It was an unforgettable experience that changed me forever and allowed me to grow professionally and personally. I was able to perform complex work perfectly well in conditions that were radically different from those I was used to working in my native country.

I was communicating with colleagues and clients in English all the time. I significantly increased my level of English and spoke it fluently. I learned a lot about the work of American banks and reporting of public companies. From time to time, this knowledge comes in handy when I work in Ukraine. I also passed the exams successfully and received the СPA certificate. It proves my professional qualification as a public accountant (auditor) in the USA and worldwide. Since returning home, my approach to work has become less authoritarian and more focused on the needs of my teams rather than just the results.

Mariana Simak,
Senior Manager

Mentoring system. Every employee, regardless of position, has a mentor from the first days of work who helps to draw up a career growth plan and provides support in any work matters. At the end of the year, it is the feedback from the mentor that plays a decisive role when deciding on the promotion of his/her mentee on the career ladder.

Candidates are expected to be able to think critically and work in a team

The company looks for people who are primarily able to think critically, adapt to new tasks quickly, interact in a team effectively, speak English fluently, and have a strong motivation for professional growth. In EY, they value healthy discussion, the right questions, and the ability to find answers to them. Technical knowledge and skills also play an important role, but they depend on the position the candidate applies for.

The company's doors are always open for young specialists in finance, law, IT, taxes, and other fields with experience and knowledge of English. Students are also welcome here. Every year EY offers students an internship in one of the company's departments. Thus, in 2023 almost 300 people participated in such educational activities. 116 final-year students or recent graduates joined the team of EY professionals.

While studying at the Kyiv National University of Economics, I attended a training organized by EY. I got excited about the idea of getting an internship in the company. Firstly, I passed several stages of selection, including accounting testing. Secondly, I got a position as an Intern. Finally, I got a full-time job.

At the beginning of my career, of course, there were some difficulties, but I accepted them as something usual because learning new things is always difficult. However, I felt tremendous support from the team. All my colleagues always helped me. The EY team is the best.

I feel that I grow professionally and intellectually every year. Today, EY is the pinnacle of the financial market in Ukraine. If you want to be at the top, the choice is obvious.

Ihor Makarchuk,
Senior Auditor

The selection and adaptation of employees

As a rule, the candidate must pass an online test to assess the level of logical thinking and knowledge of English, complete a profile test or solve a case. The candidate also has interviews with company recruiters and managers of the relevant department. During the interview, the candidate’s technical skills, personal qualities, and experience are assessed.

Oleksandra Petryk,
Leading Specialist of the HR Department
On the first day of work, all newcomers get a note with answers to the most common questions and links with names of people they should meet first. Also, the employee gets to know his/her mentor, who helps to adapt, introduces the newcomer to colleagues, sets tasks, and helps to complete them.

We hold a Welcome to EY training for new employees. We talk about the company in detail and answer all questions. After two weeks of work, the newcomer has a conversation with the recruiter. The recruiter asks about the employee's mood, feelings about work, and gives hints for the future. In a month and a half, the new employee usually has a meeting with the HR Business Partner. At the end of the three-month trial period, the new employee has one more meeting with the recruiter.

EY is always looking for ambitious and goal-oriented employees.
