Briefly about the 8-year path of Projector

In 2015, Sasha Trehub and Misha Rybachuk founded Projector. It was an offline school that offered only two programs: web design and identity. Since then, the company has grown into a large-scale educational project. With the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, it  started functioning online, offering more than 160 courses and other educational formats. Thus,  the audience of Projector expanded throughout Ukraine and beyond its borders.

In 2018, there were too many people who wanted to attend lectures in Projector. That is why the lectures began to be streamed online. As a result, a whole archive of such recordings was collected. This is how the Projector Library appeared. It is available only for subscribers. Today, the  Projector  Library is not just a collection of recordings of lectures, but a digital service with unique educational content and a full-fledged production. Presentations, discussions, and conferences are held here, as well as video courses.

In 2020, the team launched a separate socio-humanitarian faculty — Humanitarium. The courses on the history of cinema, literature, art, political science, sociology, philosophy, and various areas of modern culture are created there. The faculty team shares posts on tangential topics for self-development on social networks.

In 2021, Projector developed from a school into an online institute with full-fledged one-year professional programs.

At the Institute, students with different work experiences can gain not only individual skills, but also full-fledged professions in design, programming, management, advertising, or marketing.

In 2022, after the full-scale invasion of Russia, Projector launched new projects. Here are a few of them.

  1.  The Foundation for Women is an initiative to support 5,000 Ukrainian women who were forced to leave their homes because of the war and are looking for opportunities to develop in creative and technological professions.
  2. The Projector Mentorship is a platform for finding professional mentors. All raised money in the held meetings was sent to the Foundation or the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
  3. Lezo is a career service that includes a chatbot, thematic channels of vacancies, event announcements and career recommendations.
  4. Free courses for the servicemen. 16 students attended the course on learning the Golang programming language. Servicemen, family members of defenders, volunteers, and other people who were affected by the war and wanted to learn a new profession in the field of IT applied for the course. There will be more such courses in the future.

In 2023 company has already launched educational laboratory AI Lab and charity Projector Store with merch and collabs. And further will be more cool projects.

Sasha Trehub,
a co-founder and a CEO
“Projector is an institute that embodies free education. It is person-centered, motivates through interest, develops through practice, and changes those who seek change. Those who need it more than anyone learn from those who are truly worthy of teaching. Learning is hard. However, free education gives true freedom.”

Where and how the Projector team works

During offline times, the office of Projector was located in Podil (in Vozdvuzhenka). However, the company relocated its office to Pechersk during the Covid-19 pandemic. Nowadays, every employee can work completely remotely. However, you can meet with colleagues who miss the office bustle or need a place to work. The remote work did not affect the productivity of the team. That’s why the company is not going to force employees to work offline again.

After the full-scale invasion, the office question almost lost its relevance. In addition to Kyiv, the team works from Uzhhorod, Lviv, Lutsk, Chernivtsi, Poltava, Yuzhnoukrainsk, Odesa, etc. Projector employees also work from different parts of Europe: Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland, Germany, Portugal, Great Britain, and other countries. There are even workers who were working from Namibia (Africa) at the time of writing this text.

Yuliia Kleben,
Head of Brand
"The Projector team has the unique ability to move in sync and feel each other at a very, very long distance, even if there are a lot of kilometers, borders, and time zones between everyone. After the full-scale invasion, all employees started working online. At the same time, our communication became more cheerful and friendly. We shared our life stories. Thus, we understood the conditions our team members were in better. It helped to work and make timely breaks to rest and make conclusions."

In 2020, twice as many people began to work in Projector. Nowadays, more than 140 people work in Projector. External circumstances became a stimulus for transformations and growth. Since most employees work remotely, they use the following tools for productive work:

  • Slack – a working messenger;
  • Notion – a knowledge base with all the necessary data;
  • Basecamp – a tool for managing current tasks;
  • Zoom and Google Meet — video calls, syncs, and even online bars;
  • PeopleForce — for recruitment and HR processes management.

The team plans its schedule, has regular phone calls, and organizes activities outside work to stay on the same wavelength with each other when they launch and develop new projects in the company. Some employees work online and offline. However, it is not an obstacle for anyone to achieve good results.

Ania Chernysh,
Head of Product
"We plan all our tasks according to the OKR methodology. We set the main goals for the year and quarters. Based on them, each team defines its aims and assigns each team member the tasks. In this way, everyone understands how their actions lead to common results. The regular team calls help to move towards these results. To make them effective, we replace sync-up meetings about updates with discussions of ideas, questions, and problems. We have a chat and a monthly digest where we share information to be up-to-date. After all, we do not only communicate about work. The network within the team is essential, as well as understanding the goals, interests, and problems of the people you work with. It helps to understand each other and establish better communication."

Projector does not insist on mandatory informal meetings. It offers morning yoga and quest walks around the city, going to the cinema, and traveling together in Ukraine or abroad. The employees can take a vacation without limits and restrictions. However, they have to complete all tasks.

Liena Kovalchuk,
SMM Lead
"I didn't really like team-building in the companies where I once worked. Most often, it was completely uninteresting and exhausting. No one cared about such meetings at all. In Projector, team meetings are different. I really feel like a part of the team. I know that I do something important because together we change education in Ukraine every day. I also know for sure that during my time working here, I improved my soft skills and began to react much more gently to things and events that previously threw me off track. It seems that together we can do absolutely everything."

About support and development of employees

Every Projector employee sooner or later finds herself/himself in the role of a student, because it is really impossible to work at the Institute and does not develop themselves at work. All employees have an unlimited access to the Library, and discounts on courses of the Projector.

There are strict rules and requirements for all team members who apply for the courses. Everyone does it on a general basis. If an employee loses out to other candidates in terms of skills and motivation, he/she can’t apply for the courses. When a team member does become a student, he/she feels more responsibility during his/her studies.

Projector is also a place where specialists grow within the team. A lot of current Team Leaders and Product Managers started from administrative positions or Course and Event Managers. Here is an example of Anna Chernysh's career. First, she was a Coworking Administrator. Next, she became an Event Manager. Then, she started working as a Project Manager. After that, she chose the career of a Product Manager. Finally, she is the Head of Product.

Alina Skoryk grew from Course Manager to Account Manager of the Development & Data Science Faculty. She started working for Projector when she was a four-year student of Kharkiv University. Then, she became so passionate about the work that she chose a part-time enrollment and moved to Kyiv.

Alina Skoryk,
Account Manager
"What I value most in my work is the team. We unite and pull out all the stops. We rejoice at each of our achievements and accept our defeats. Working in Projector means being on the move, experimenting, and developing cool projects."

Ivan Butko joined the team in 2020 as Customer Support & Sales Manager. After finishing courses in Projector, he started working as a Product Marketer. He had been working in this sphere for over a year and a half since then. In the spring of 2023, he obtained a new position that involved technical support for other marketers — Marketing Technical Lead. Such a position has not existed in the company until now. So, it is both a kind of experiment for the team and a new career stage for Ivan.

Ivan Butko,
Product Marketing Manager
"Good companies build good teams, and good teams consist of good people. Projector puts a high value on its employees. They are different, but the combination of experience and freedom in the actions of employees gives a good result. Our marketing is diverse, as there are many different projects. It is an advantage, for sure, because there are always opportunities for professional development."

Before the employee’s first working day, the company will purchase all the necessary and needed equipment for work such as laptops, tablets, etc. In addition, they will help with subscriptions and settings of the necessary services and programs for work.

"In Projector, I felt a strong culture fit, because I dealt with progressive, creative, and professional people. A great advantage is that the company has a transparent and clear internal system of relationships. In six months of work, I never felt confused or unheard. I was pleasantly surprised by the situation when the team unitedly supported me in a difficult period of my life. It only strengthened the opinion that I am in the right place.

Previously, it was sometimes difficult for me to work on something that I was not interested in. However, there is a great combination of people, an interesting and promising industry, and great attention to quality in everything — from corporate processes to project results. I believe that it will be a fruitful and long-term cooperation!"

Telegraph.design Journalist

The internal code written by the entire team

The Covid-19 quarantine in 2020 became a real springboard for Projector. It started working online, increased the number of projects, students, employees, and target audience. At that time, the Projector team got together to formulate what unites everyone and what colleagues they are waiting for. All opinions and positions were formalized in the internal code. Two years later the team discussed previously accepted values and decided that they are still relevant. If you are interested in working in the Projector team, check if these values and ideas resonate with you.

  • Start with passion

    In Projector, people are motivated to do what really drives them. After all, when people are passionate about their work, even routine tasks do not tire them.

  • Everyone solves problems together

    It's cool to be able to help people, the city, and the country. Everyone helps everyone in the Projector team.

  • You can work better

    Sasha Trehub's catchphrase and his TEDx speech helped to create this great value. In Projector, all employees believe that they should always set a high bar for themselves and have ambitious goals. Only then, it will be possible to do meaningful things.

  • Be united!

    Important things are done in collaboration with somebody. The Institute will always help the Library, the Library will always help the Institute, and vice versa. A lot of external collaborations of Projector with other brands, products, and organizations are born thanks to this value.

  • Create despite fear

    Projector convinces: “It's normal to be afraid, but you can't let fear stop you”. Therefore, the team will always support the desire to take risks and experiment.

Yuliia Kleban,
Head of Brand
"What excites me the most is that as a team we have not lost our ability to create crazy things, take risks, and experiment even in the darkest times. When we were back on our feet after February 24, 2022, we started generating new projects almost every month. We collected funds for the Armed Forces, and those who suffered from the war, created charitable collaborations, and hung outdoor advertisements in Kyiv... All these things gave us the feeling that we were more alive than ever and ready to invest in the development of the company and Ukrainian education, despite anxieties, uncertainties, and difficulties."

What kind of employees is Projector looking for?

Nowadays, Projector, like a real institute, works on creating full-fledged programs for studying creative and technological professions. To launch all these programs, Product Teams have to ensure the development of all faculties. Some specialists have to deal with the Library, the Foundation, the mentoring platform, and new projects.

In addition to Product Teams, Projector has expert teams in the following areas:

  •     SMM;
  •     Brand;
  •     Content;
  •     Marketing;
  •     Design;
  •     Video Production;
  •     Customer Support;
  •     Education-to-business;
  •     HR;
  •     Development;
  •     Finance and Jurisprudence.

There is the largest Courses Care Team which includes Managers and Account Managers of Training Programs.

Still couldn’t find your field of employment in this list? Don't worry! Projector is growing so fast that no one knows for sure what other specialists will be needed in the future. However, Projector is ready to hire responsible and proactive people with a passion for work and faith in practical education.

Mira Myronova,
Team Leader of Courses Care
"One of the questions at the interview was: "What is the most important thing to you when choosing a company?". I answered without hesitation: "People." I have been working in Projector for almost two years. I have not changed my opinion. A person in our team is the most valuable resource, an engine of progress, and a generator of ideas. Every opinion is important and can influence the development of the product and the project in general. In Projector, I realized that I start my working day with pleasure.”
Liena Kovalchuk,
SMM Lead
"I have been working in Projector for more than three years. Nowadays, I understand that time flies relentlessly. I can say that joining this company was the best decision. Everyone in the company supports you from the first day. They try to onboard you in a cool way and gradually introduce you to the internal processes and features of the company. The employee is gradually involved in the work. He/she does not have to do all tasks at once. The workers are not snowed under with urgent cases. Many people have a habit of saying that their colleagues are their family. I always perceived something like this quite ironically, but I understood that these are not empty words. There are people who you can always rely on and know that they will help."

What should you prepare for if you want to get a job in Projector?

The candidate selection process, depending on the position, consists of the following stages:

  •     reviewing a CV, portfolio, and motivational letter;
  •     test task (mostly for the Content Team and Designers);
  •     interview with a HR;
  •     an interview with a Team Leader and a Product Manager;
  •     an interview with one of the co-founders and HRD.
Kateryna Shkvara,
HR Generalist
"The first question we hear from a newcomer is, “How will the onboarding take place?” That's why we provide a plan at the beginning of onboarding. It includes information about our values, goals, team, product, processes, and tools. HRs, Product Managers, and Team Leaders are involved in onboarding. In addition to scheduled training, these specialists conduct one-to-one meetings with newcomers. They discuss their impressions and the onboarding process, interaction with the team, and help where it is needed."

No one can tell you how to get a job in Projector better than its founder. Read seven tips from Oleksandr Trehub at the following link.

If you have already been hired, there will be no standard probation period.
Oksana Molochko,
HR
"If a person has been selected for a job, he/she is a full member of the team. We do not set special financial conditions at the beginning. Our main task is to get to know each other. During the first month at work, the newcomer adapts to a new working place, receives a review, and draws up long-term plans for joint work."
